Garden Updates

Stay alert for snakes!

Snakes are still out and about in the garden. Tierrasanta is a natural habitat for rattlers like the Southern Pacific Rattlesnake (see image by BJ Stacey, some rights reserved (CC BY-NC)). Click the Learn More button for more on snakes in San Diego and how to stay safe.

Snakes in our garden can be anywhere. Keep a keen eye for snakes hiding in plain sight right in your garden bed. They can be very hard to see in the walk-ways between beds, too.

If you are bitten, it is important to remember to:

  1. Stay calm

  2. Immobilize the bitten extremity - DO NOT apply a bandage or ice, and do not try to cut or suck out the venom

  3. Wash the skin - soap and water works best, or an antiseptic wipe

  4. Remove any jewelry or tight-fitting clothing, in case of swelling

  5. Call for help - call 911 to get medical attention as soon as possible; if you have to find a phone, walk at a relaxed pace

Main Water Shutoff

Water On, Water Off

Recently, we’ve noticed that the main water shut-off being left on after the last gardener has left the garden campus. When you are the last gardener on-site, it is your responsibility to turn-off the water when you depart.

Do not assume someone else is coming after you.

This is an issue because if there is an open hose somewhere in the garden then water will be wasted while the main is left on indefinitely.

When you leave, give the main a quick check to ensure it is in the off position (see image).

TLC Compost Bins

                    Compost 101

Compost bins may be used… but you must be willing to do the following:

  • Cut ALL materials you add to the bins into small pieces… 8 inches or less.

  • Turn materials under several times to mix and cover.

  • Do not add seeds, weeds or disease.

If you are not willing to do these things, then do not use the bins.

For those wanting to participate in composting, leave some time at the end of your gardening session to properly dispose of compost materials.
